On Tuesday 3rd June 2008 Hamble-RAGE held a fund raising event at La Dolce Vita in Hamble, and raised over £2000. The restaurant was packed out with local residents and business people concerned about the proposals for gravel pits along the HamblePeninsula. The food was donated by the restaurant owner, Chris Hannides and his staff volunteered their services for the night allowing the proceeds to go entirely to the RAGE campaign. This and the raffle prizes donated by local businesses – Clippers hairdressers, Passion Flowers, Henri Lloyd, Musto, the Salon, Hair on the Square, Mark Chisnell novelist, the Whyte Harte, Marco’s Italian restaurant, Pig Bags, Bang-the-Corner.com, - as well as some local residents clearly shows the level of concern amongst the local community.
RAGE have another two events organised – a BBQ at the Bugle on Thursday 12th June and a Quiz night and auction on Wednesday 18th June at the Whyte Harte.
The money raised from these events and donations from local businesses are going towards funding an independent study RAGE has commissioned on the Minerals Plan. This study will examine the selection of the sites on the HamblePeninsula and the alternatives. RAGE are concerned that developing gravel pits on the Hamble Peninsula will have devastating effect on the local communities, the already overloaded Hamble Lane and the River Hamble businesses and users. In addition, the impact on the Hamble Lane for development proposals at Woolston (1400 houses plus offices) has been largely overlooked. RAGE will be raising these issues to the County Council and through the work being undertaken by Adams Hendry will be able to do so in a structured and informed way.
